Comparison of dynamic ray tracing systems in ray-centered and wavefront orthonormal coordinates

Vlastislav Cerveny

Summary

Dynamic ray tracing plays an important role in paraxial ray methods. In this paper, dynamic ray tracing systems in ray-centered and wavefront orthonormal coordinates in inhomogeneous anisotropic media are studied. Both these systems consist of four linear ordinary differential equations of the first order along the reference ray. These two systems, known from literature, were derived independently and are given in different forms. It is proved in this paper that both systems are fully equivalent. Consequently, the simpler dynamic ray tracing system in wavefront orthonormal coordinates can be used also if we work in ray-centered coordinates.

Keywords
